VetCert Year One: Keeping Your VOSB Status After the Certificate Arrives

The SBA VetCert certificate goes in the frame and the language goes on the website, and then the real work starts. VOSB status is something you keep, not a trophy you win. Blue Violet Security, LLC earned its certification in June 2026, and here is the maintenance discipline we run so the status stays true.

What Keeps a VOSB Status True

  • Ownership and control: veteran ownership and control must stay intact. Stock transfers, new partners, and governance changes can affect eligibility, and material changes are reportable to the SBA.

  • Size discipline: growth can push you over the small business size standard for your NAICS. Status is tied to size at the time of each offer, not at the time of certification.

  • Keep SAM.gov current: a lapsed SAM registration can cost set-aside eligibility even with a valid certificate. Track the expiration date like a contract deadline, because for VA Vets First work, it is one.

  • Represent honestly: solicitations require representations and certifications. If your facts changed since certification, certify from current facts, never from stale ones.

A Simple Maintenance Rhythm

  • Annual review: verify ownership, control, and size against your primary NAICS.

  • Calendar the renewals: VetCert renewal and SAM expiration, with reminders starting 90 days out.

  • Document decisions: board actions and ownership changes filed where your proposal team can actually find them.

The companies that lose VOSB status rarely set out to. They drift: a transfer here, a missed renewal there, a representation copied from last year. A quarterly check of ownership, size, and registration dates prevents all of it.

One more habit worth building: screenshot and file your certification listing on the SBA's public certification search site periodically. Procurement teams do check it, and having your own dated record of the listing prevents surprises during a proposal crunch.
